Hani Mosammat. A self-taught singer songwriter at MixUp 2025

MixUp 2025 is giving Coventry’s music students the chance to showcase their work in a professional recording setting, and for third-year student Hani Mosammat, it’s a significant milestone in her musical journey.

Unlike many musicians who receive formal training, Hani’s path has been entirely self-directed. “I wasn’t taught as a child. I’m self-taught. I learned piano off YouTube videos,” she reveals, showing her passion for music and dedication to constantly improve.

At MixUp 2025, Hani talked about her inspiration for her songwriting, “Eastern music inspired my song. It has that harmonic minor and sharpness to it,” she explains. While she intended for one of her songs to have an acoustic guitar feel, the final outcome surprised her. “The second song we did today was meant to be an acoustic guitar but ended up sounding more Amy Winehouse-y,” she shares, embracing the organic evolution of her sound.

For Hani, the recording session was more than just an experience—it was a step toward something bigger. “I’m hoping this session would go towards releasing my first song,” she says, hinting at her ambitions beyond university. However, she sees herself more as a songwriter than a performer. “I tend to song write more than be an artist. I hope to compose music for a film one day.”

This was another successful year for MixUp 2025 as it hosted many other talented artists hoping to make their names known in the coming years.
